We just LOVE this rare 1960s Adele Simpson Ladies’ winter gingham checked coat for her Smithline Exclusive line for New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue’s B. Altman & Co. Adele Simpson was called America’s “First Lady of Fashion,” emerging as a leading designer of accessible clothing for professional women in the 1950s and 60s. This is an amazing example of her design, with a checked gingham fabric in brown, cream and black and a wide brown belt with gold buckle, oversized collar and lining. The coat’s belt has covered panels of the checked fabric to the sides and the belt can be easily taken out and the coat looks equally stylish without the belt too. This coat is a great addition for a winter wardrobe and to also gain a piece from an instrumental women in fashion’s history.
